My Pregnancy

Well, we are expecting our first girl October 1, 2001. (This is an Estimated Due Date or EDD)

Her name will be Catherine Monica Carter.

Here is what I look like at 32 weeks!  Mike likes the second one.  I think they are both large pictures of me!

I weigh 137 as of 8/5/2001 and my belly measures 39 inches.

horrible picture, but at least it is a pic of my belly!

My doctor's name is Dr. Lobue and the R.N. is Rita Kloos.  At Kaiser in Rancho Cordova, CA, I switch between the two each visit.  I will be delivering at Kaiser at Morse Ave.

Doctor Visits and Journal

March 29, 2001 ~ 13 weeks:  Had Prenatal Class.  It was 2 hours long and included filling out paperwork, watching a video, and drawing 5 vials of blood for all the blood tests.

Start weight 110

April 3, 2001 ~ 14 weeks: First doctor appointment.  We saw Rita Kloos, R.N.  Weight:114Blood pressure: 100/64.  Urinalysis: protein and sugar both negative.  Results of blood tests:  Immune to German Measles, and blood type is O+.  Baby Vitals:  It measured about 3 inches in length and had a fetal heart rate of 140 bpm.  This is the first time we also go to see the fetus.  The first ultrasound was done.

April 17, 2001 ~ 16 weeks: Saw Dr. Lobue this time.  Weight: 114.  Blood pressure: 120/60.  Urinalysis: protein and sugar negative.  To lab for blood draw for Alpha-fetoprotein.  Fetal heart rate: 150 bpm.

Felt first movements!!!

May 15, 2001 ~ 20 weeks: Second Ultrasound.  Found out It is a Girl!  Fetal heart rate: 139 bpm.

May 16, 2001 ~ 20 weeks: Rita Kloos, R.N.  Weight: 118.  Blood pressure: 120/26.  Urinalysis: both negative.  Fetal heart rate: 167 bpm.  Rita kept the EDD at October 1, 2001, and it is recorded that it is a Girl.  Alpha-fetoprotein came back negative!

May 24, 2001 ~ 21 weeks: Sierra Christian Jr. High and High School gave me a baby shower.  A lot of wonderful things, but not quite as wonderful as the Crib and Crib Mattress!!

June 6-10, 2001 ~ 23 weeks:  Went to Idaho.  Stayed first in Spokane, Washington at Shelly's and had another baby shower.  Gifts included a car seat and bathtub.  In the morning of the 8th,Mike packed a U-Haul and in the evening we attended Haley's high school graduation.  The 9th and 10th we drove back to Sacramento.

June 13, 2001 ~ 24 weeks: Dr. Lobue.  Weight: 124.  Urinalysis: Both negative.  Fetal heart rate: 147 bpm.  Was given instructions to come early to the next appointment because I had to take the glucose test and anemia blood draw.

26 weeks: First felt Braxton-Hicks contraction.

July 12, 2001 ~ 28 weeks:  Rita Kloos, R.N.  Weight: 131. Blood pressure: 102/60.  Urinalysis: Both negative.  Fetal heart rate: 152 bpm.  The glucose test did not happen this day because I had to stand in line for 5 mins, and by then it was too late.  Decided to come in the next day.

I have started to feel Catherine hiccup.  It is such a weird feeling.  Also, to the right of my belly button is usually a large hard bump.  Not sure if it Catherine's head or bottom.

July 18 & 19, 2001 ~ 29 weeks:  Failed 1 hour glucose test.  Blood sugar was 175, when it was suppose to be in the 140's.  Guess I should not have eaten that Pop-Tart.  Had to come in the next day(19th) for a 3 hour test.  Did not get a phone call, so I assumed I passed the 3 hour.  Next time I will know that I would have to have blood drawn every hour with the 3 hour glucose test.  I looked like a pin cushion!

July 31, 2001 ~ 31 weeks: Started Child Birthing classes.  We have six classes in all on every Tuesday.  This week's homework was to give Mike a backrub, the way I want mine rubbed.  Yuck huh, well...he'll have to reciprocate the backrub at the next class.

Week 31: Received some baby clothes and maternity clothes from Jim and Amy!  I was very excited about the maternity clothes.  I now can wear jeans again!  Thank you two sooo much!!!

August 7, 2001 ~ 2nd Child Birthing Class:  Learned a few more relaxation techniques.  Since I am very against getting an epidural, I want to know and have down all the techniques I can.  Many can do it, why can't I!  Saw a very graphic film, and went over pre-term labor symptoms.

August 9, 2001 ~ 32 weeks.  Rita Kloos, R.N.  Weight: 138 Blood pressure: 106/72.  Urinalysis: Both negative.  The 3 hour glucose test came back normal so I passed.  Still am going every four weeks until next week, but have an appointment in 2 weeks to measure the height of the fundus again.  The height of the fundus is from the top of my pelvic bone to the top of the uterus.  Since I am at 32 weeks I should measure 32 cm, but I measured 31 cm.  Rita said one cm is not to worry about, this just might put me at 31 weeks instead of 32.  I'll find out in two weeks.  She went over high blood pressure (pre-eclampsia), but said that nothing shows that I would have that at all.  Next time (4weeks) I have a different doctor, because my doctor is out and they don't know when she is coming back.  I can't see Rita again because she is a R.N., and they want you to see a doctor.

33 weeks:

August 13, 2001 ~  First (EVER) dentist appointment:  I would consider this a milestone for me!  I was of course nervous, but it came down to it that I only had 2 cavities.  Mike and I made another appointment to go in and each get fillings on the 15th.  We sat next to each other and was even in the same room when each of us got the fillings done.  My filling went VERY well, no pain or anything.  In fact the side of my face only stayed numb for a little while.  Mike's went well also.  Another appointment was made for the 16th to get the rest of the fillings. I'll write about that later.

August 14, 2001 ~ 3rd Child Birthing Class:  Talked about medical interventions, and about pain management.  Got into groups and made lists about what the mom's want at home in Early labor and then at the hospital in active labor, and then also postpartum at the hospital and home.  The dad's also had to make list according to the guidelines.  Watched a video about epidurals.  I am convinced that I will NOT be getting an epidural.  We also talked about the narcotics they insert into the IV to take the edge off.  Next week..."fake" labor and pushing!

August 16, 2001 ~ 2nd dentist appointment:  I got my other cavity filled and also had some work done on another tooth.  This one was a little more painful.  I could feel the first needle go in, but not the second so all was good.  Then I became nauseated.  It subsided, but then returned when they were working on the second tooth.  I was not in any pain, but felt really nauseated.  Now, I'm a happy camper with good teeth.

August  16, 2001 ~ Sierra Christian Jr. High and High School Rally:  This was great!!  Had lots of fun and met a lot of the new students!

August 17, 2001 ~ Teacher Workday: A lot of listening.  By 2:30 I was tired and ready to go home!

34 weeks:

August 20, 2001 ~ Teacher Workday in Classroom: Got the classroom all decorated thanks to Jeff S., my co-teacher.  Had Meet Your Teacher Night that night and met A LOT of the new students and families.  Should be a wonderful year!

August 21, 2001 ~ 4th Child Birthing Class: C-Section discussion.  Also what to do for your partner when she is in labor.  How to get ready for pushing and in what position.

August 22, 2001 ~ First Day of School at Sierra Christian Jr. High and High School: This was a VERY LONG day.  I was there 7:30-4:30.  I was in a little pain, and very thankful that my usual days are 9:30-2:30.

August 24, 2001 ~ Appointment with Rita Kloos, R.N. to measure the height of the fundus:  Measured normal, but now my blood pressure is too high:120/80.  I have to go in for a retest on Tuesday, August 28, 2001.  I also found out that I have gained a total of 30 pounds.  All of which is baby!

August 28, 2001 ~ 35 Weeks: Blood Pressure Re-Test:  Blood Pressure fine!

August 28, 2001 ~ 5th Child Birthing Class: Postpartum.  Kind of interesting, but also kind of depressing!

September 4, 2001 ~ 36 weeks: Dr. MacMillan-What a wonderful doctor!!  We really liked her.  Weight: 144.  Blood Pressure: 110/70.  Urinalysis: Both negative.  Catherine is head down and in the position she is suppose to be in.  Dr. MacMillan said she should be around 7 pounds.  All normal and nothing wrong.  Sounds like a baby that is very snug in there and is not quite ready to come out.  Which is a good thing! Appointments are now two weeks apart.

September 4, 2001 ~ Last Child Birthing Class: Last Class!!  Hello Baby: Newborn Care and Breastfeeding.  Actually very interesting, but a lot of the same things we have been hearing from the beginning.

September 18, 2001 ~ 38 weeks: Rita Kloos, R.N. Weight: 144.5.  Blood Pressure:114/62. Urinalysis: Both negative. Height of the fundus: 38 cm.  An internal was done and my cervix is still long, I'm not dilated, and she is not engaged.  The only thing is that she is head down, which we knew from the last appointment.

October 1, 2001~ 40 Weeks: Catherine's EDD

October 2, 2001~40 weeks: Dr. Lobue Weight: 144.  Blood Pressure: 102/60. Urinalysis: Both negative. Height of the fundus: 38 cm.  Cervix is starting to soften, but no dilation.  Set up an appointment for next week to a non-stress test.  Inducing will then be discussed.

October 8, 2001 ~ 41 weeks: Went into labor at about 9:00 pm with contractions about 5-7 minutes apart lasting about 1-2 minutes.

October 9, 2001 ~ Went to Kaiser Morse Ave Hospital at 3:30 am with the same contractions.  After exam, I was 90% effaced, 3-4 cm dilated, and she was at -2 position (2 in above cervix). They at first asked if I wanted to walk around and then get re-checked, then they asked my due date.  Upon finding out that I was a week overdue, they admitted me.  At about 9:30 am I was re-checked, just to find out that she turned herself and became breech.  A c-section was the only option.  At 10:00 am they started prepping me for the c-section and at 10:46 am Catherine Monica was delivered.  We stayed in the hospital until 10/11/2001.  For more information please check out her website!
